Stand at the wall where the unit will go and fully open the front door. Measure the gap between the wall and the door edge. Any unit deeper than this minus 3cm will catch the door or force you to angle past it.
Slim console tables (20–30cm deep) work in tight hallways because they leave the walking corridor clear. A full-depth 40cm+ unit gives more storage but needs at least 90cm of corridor width to remain comfortable to walk past.
Most hallway units sit flush against the skirting board rather than the wall. Measure the skirting projection — usually 1–2cm — and check the unit's back feet or base will clear it. A unit that rocks on skirting is a trip hazard.
A walking corridor of less than 80cm feels cramped once coats and bags are in place. Measure the full width of your hallway, then subtract the depth of any unit you are considering. If the result is under 80cm, look at a slimmer option or wall-mounted hooks instead.
Slanted shoe racks (20–25cm deep) and stair-step shelves use less floor depth than flat shelves for the same number of pairs. A bench with shoe storage underneath is efficient if you have width: it provides seating without extra depth.
Over-door hooks can work on composite doors, but check the door thickness — composite doors are often 44mm or thicker, which is wider than some hook brackets assume. Hooks designed for internal doors (35mm) may not sit flush and could mark the door edge.
Freestanding coat stands work well if you have floor space. Over-door hooks are the simplest no-drill option. Adhesive hooks can hold light coats on painted plaster walls if the surface is clean and the product is rated for the weight — most adhesive hooks max out at around 3–5kg per hook.
