Measure the usable zone, not just the cupboard footprint
Measure the total internal width, depth and height first. Then note the height from the floor to the bottom of the U-bend — this tells you whether a two-tier shelf fits underneath it. Also measure the door opening width, which is often narrower than the internal cupboard width in older kitchens with centre hinges.

Two-tier shelf units are the most common under-sink solution because they use vertical space on either side of the pipe. L-shaped or U-shaped products fit around the pipe more tightly but need a wider opening to get in. Pull-out drawer units work in wider cupboards but must be checked against the door opening, not just the internal width.

Check the door hinge swing and opening width
In many UK kitchen cupboards, the internal width is larger than the effective door opening. The door hinge, door frame and any centre stile all reduce how wide an organiser can be to slide in. Measure the clear opening width with the door fully open before ordering anything wider than about 40cm.
